We appreciate that it can be a little daunting when you visit a Chiropractor for the first time
Don`t worry, we have tried to outline what you can expect
When you arrive, you will need to go through approximately 5 minutes of paperwork in order to provide us with some background information about yourself such as your medical history and the nature of your condition as well as details of any previous injuries. This is so that we can provide the best possible care which is tailored to your specific needs and circumstances.
If you are taking any medication, please either bring it with you or come with a note of the name(s). It may be easier for you to bring a copy of your repeat prescription.
You will then be invited to change into an examination gown (underwear is to be kept on) to make it easier for the Chiropractor to examine you by removing any bulky or restrictive clothing. We appreciate that it is not always easy for some of you to get changed, so please don’t hesitate to ask for assistance.
As a primary patient contact healthcare professional, your chiropractor can then examine any condition that appears to be neuro-musculo-skeletal in origin and be able to provide a working diagnosis. If this is not possible they can then assist your referral for further investigations.
Once a diagnosis has been made all treatment options both Chiropractic and Non-Chiropractic will be discussed to allow you to make an informed choice about your treatment.
Chiropractic treatment has been found to be valuable treatment option in many conditions that include: non specific mechanical back pain, leg pain, knee pain, headaches, some forms of dizziness, some mild sports injuries.
In order to pinpoint your problem, the Chiropractor will ask you a number of questions related to your condition. Then a variety of targeted tests will be performed to determine the cause of your pain.
Should your specific condition require x-rays or an MRI scan, we will request these and organise them for you through either a private provider or your GP. Images are requested either to rule out more serious conditions or to assist us in assessing the most effective treatment plan for you.
After having taken your case history and examining you, the Chiropractor will explain in detail your diagnosis and will recommend a personalised treatment plan. Once this has been done, treatment can begin. Please note that for most cases treatment can be given on your first appointment.
Treatment
Chiropractors use their hands to adjust the joints of your spine and limbs where restrictions and stiffness are found, improving mobility and relieving pain. The treatment aims to improve the joint and muscle function.
Adjusting joints restores movement whilst massage and stretching of tight muscles helps you to return to carrying out your normal activities more comfortably.
Your treatment may include ultrasound and/or dry needling. Ultrasound can be used to help relieve pain. Dry needling is often confused with Acupuncture and whilst they use the same needles, the rationale is different. Dry needling is used to help relieve pain and muscle spasms.
Before leaving you will be given instructions on certain activities or procedures to be carried out in your own home. This is to help you maintain the improvements to your mobility in between treatments. The instructions may include the application of either heat or ice, avoidance of certain activities or positions as well as some simple exercises. A short course of treatment is often recommended to give you the best possible outcome.
